Do you want to take the “Handmade Pledge“? I did. I will be buying handmade items and making items for gifts this Christmas. There are a few gifts that will come from the store, I must admit, but most are handmade. It seems that there is a great movement lately to Handmade. There is a neat article on the new activism “craftivism”.
An excerpt from the article “Craftivism, is crafting the new activism?”
Well, is crafting activism? That answer varies from knitter to knitter. Some women want their work to make a political statement while others simply love crafting and feel no reason to justify it. To some, this is what feminism is about—taking something you love, making it your own and not apologizing for enjoying it.
“My participation in craft[ing] is my choice, not a role that I was made to play,” Greer said. “In distinguishing the fact that this is how I choose to spend my time instead of how I’m expected to spend my time, I am just as much of a feminist as I was before I learned to knit and purl.”
There are lots of neat things to read on that site, and while your at it, go ahead, make the pledge…even if it’s only a few gifts, start giving and buying handmade!
One of the best places I’ve found for buying handmade is Etsy…I’ve posted items I’ve purchased before, but if you haven’t checked the site out for your self…what are you waiting for. It’s officially the Christmas buying season!
