What a day. I did get everything packed, but when I called to confirm the truck was coming on time and that they would be able to get down to where I was going to fill the pallet, I found out that the person who did my first quote did not ask the right questions, and I am not eligible for the rate they quoted, in fact the new quote would be more than 2x the price…Crazy. So I decided to regroup and move in a different direction. (NOTE: When you own your own business you become very adept at regrouping) USPS has a great box that is only $10.00 no matter how heavy it is, as long as the stuff fits in the box, that is the rate. I sent all the tools via that method and will be boxing up all the show supplies to send separately tomorrow. They won’t all fit in those nice little boxes, but the money I saved already, will make full price hurt a bit less, for the rest of the stuff. This means that I worked all day today, and still have many hours left tomorrow, but there is no way I was paying what UPS wanted. Blech!
I am realizing more and more that NO ONE really wants to be a friend to small businesses…not the Government, not the postal systems, not the health insurance folks, the list goes on and one. It’s almost like people who work for the big companies, that handle all these needs, are receiving great personal satisfaction in saying “You think your so cool, forging your own path…well, here, try finding affordable health care, or a reasonable freighting method…hahahahaha…hahahahahahah….hahahahahah, who’s got the boring desk job now, Missy.”
I was thinking about this sort of thing last night while listening to the Craft Sanity podcast with from Emily Martin of the Black Apple,, even before the shipping rigor moral. Listening to her talk about running a cottage industry style business found me chiming in with a lot of Amens. She seems to feel it is all worth it and so do I, but it isn’t easy, that’s for sure… Okay, rant is over, it’s been a long day month. But then along came some needles, yarn and a snack…
Tonight, I rewarded all my wonderful efforts and accomplishments, by allowing for some knitting time and making myself blueberry rice pudding. This stuff is wonderful. Not too sweet, and the blueberries add a nicer, more subtle flavor, than the raisins that most rice pudding recipes suggest. The berries are heated, but not really cooked, so they keep a nice firm texture. Also, it only takes 1 cup of berries so if you only have a short amount of time to pick, but really want a blueberry treat, this is a great recipe. I served it up in one of my grandmother’s little glasses.
The knitting went quite well, after Kim commented on the blog! (thank you Kim) It worked up very fast tonight. I just need to make ties.
It isn’t very photogenic, so I got permission to show my friend’s adorable grandbaby, wearing the one she made for her. Isn’t she, and the hat, fabulous!
