I don’t quilt, I think I can safetly say I will not become a quilter. I don’t think I’m precise enough, patient enough, or have enough extra room in the “crafts that I do” category, to add that. However, I do admire quilts, especially particularly unique and interesting quits. I love Old quilts, like the kind that were made in the time of my great grandmother. I love how the fabric feels. Old cotton has a completely different feel than even good quality modern cotton. If all that is true than what is with the heading of this post?
I decided Mini needed a very cozy blanket. She has a lovely knit cotton blanket that serves her well, and has since birth. My friend Ellen made it and it’s definitely a favorite. However, last winter she had sleep sacks, this winter, she’s too big for that, and in an attempt to curb fuel spending, we are keeping our heat lower than normal around here. It’s not freezing, or anything, but it could be called (and is often called by my mom and dad) chilly in my house. I want mini to be warm. We dress her well for bed, but she’s anti socks in the bed, can’t blame her, as I am too, and I just think a nice warm blanket is important.
My solution was to make a flannel quilt. Just big, 9″, squares sewn together. Nothing fancy, precise, or detailed. I will stitch that to a backing of chenille, and probably forgo the “quilting” and go with ribbons tied in knots. I’m not sure that really qualifies as a quilt, nor am I concerned about that, I just think it looks more fun than one large piece of fabric, and it is a bit larger because the chenille is 60″ wide, so with the squares I can make it larger than the standard 40something inch quilting fabric width.
I finished cutting the squares, and decided to lay it out tonight, with some help from mini. She’s excited about the quilt and excited to have it on her bed! I’m hoping that it works out that she can help with the sewing tomorrow. She likes to help and I worked out a way for her to help run the machine (remember the bean bag post?). We’ll see how the day goes.
Doesn’t this image appear as though she’s a lot of help?
How about now?

Wow. I knew that quilts had levels of intricacy, but I did not realise the definition of a quilt was so narrow.
This is great. I loved watching you two together and these action shots captured it well.
