Happy June! The weather is finally nice again, and looks to be for a few days. I have some planting to do, so that is good. The potatoes plot has been prepped, so I'm going to cut up my seed potatoes so we can get those in the ground. More on that tomorrow. Last night we did have reports of a "chance of frost", so we covered up all the crops with sheets. It always amuses me to see much of the garden tucked in for bed.
I finally finished my socks. I dragged these all over the place knitting a few rows here and a few rows there. They were worked on during bible studies, poultry school, walking around stores, visiting with family and friends, walking around farmers markets. That is how I knit socks, on the go. They are simple, portable and repetitive. Making them the perfect go to projects for when I'm supposed to be doing something else, but I still want to knit.
Our new church arrangement doesn't start until 1:30. It's very fun, we eat lunch at church, then have a very interactive bible study. I really like the format, the late start time and the whole feel/flow of the time together. Not being a very formal type person, a regular church service never suited me real well. Because I have all this time in the morning I always want to do something special. Something that gives me moments to relax, and ponder the verses we'll be discussing.
This week, that time was spent making a skirt. During which, I kept thinking of a poem from Proverbs about the noble woman. I find this section very inspiring, challenging and empowering. The woman is capable, strong, she cares for her family, handles financial arrangements, makes very important decisions, her children and husband see what she does and respect her for it, and honor her. She's nothing short of amazing. I strive to be like this woman, not just busy, but purposeful, and with a character worth being honored. I'm not there yet, but continuing to grow in that direction.
Who can find a virtuous and capable wife?
She is more precious than rubies.
Her husband can trust her,
and she will greatly enrich his life.
She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.
She finds wool and flax
and busily spins it.
She is like a merchant’s ship,
bringing her food from afar.
She gets up before dawn to prepare breakfast for her household
and plan the day’s work for her servant girls.
She goes to inspect a field and buys it;
with her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She is energetic and strong,
a hard worker.
She makes sure her dealings are profitable;
her lamp burns late into the night.
Her hands are busy spinning thread,
her fingers twisting fiber.
She extends a helping hand to the poor
and opens her arms to the needy.
She has no fear of winter for her household,
for everyone has warm clothes.
She makes her own bedspreads.
She dresses in fine linen and purple gowns.
Her husband is well known at the city gates,
where he sits with the other civic leaders.
She makes belted linen garments
and sashes to sell to the merchants.
She is clothed with strength and dignity,
and she laughs without fear of the future.
When she speaks, her words are wise,
and she gives instructions with kindness.
She carefully watches everything in her household
and suffers nothing from laziness.
Her children stand and bless her.
Her husband praises her:
“There are many virtuous and capable women in the world,
but you surpass them all!”
Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last
but a woman who fears the Lord
will be greatly praised.
Let her deeds publicly declare her praise.
Here is my Proverbs 31 skirt. Off white linen, simple basic skirt with an elastic waste and a ruffle at the bottom. I love wearing it, and I wore it to church yesterday, as it was started and finished in the time between waking and leaving.
